1st Battalion
The Royal Welsh
Welcome to the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh webpage. My name is Lieutenant Colonel Edward Willcox and I have the great privilege of commanding the 1st Battalion. We are a proud Welsh Battalion and recruit from across Wales, Great Britain and the rest of the World; many soldiers serve with relatives or close friends in the same Battalion. We are the best armoured Infantry Battalion in the British Army and welcome anyone who wants to be a part of our Regimental family.
Whilst operations, training, sport and adventurous training sum up our activity, we have to live somewhere. We are very lucky to be based in Tidworth, Wiltshire which is just south of Swindon (on the M4) and only about 90 minutes from most of the soldiers’ homes in South Wales. Where possible we run a short week starting at 1000hrs on a Monday and finishing before lunchtime on a Friday so that we can all get three nights at home every week.

We are in a brand new barracks with modern, en-suite single rooms, and excellent sports facilities. Those with families live close by in houses suited to the size of their family. The children have a choice of primary schools and a secondary school which gained academy status in 2009. So we have a firm and friendly base to work from; our little bit of Wales in Wiltshire. Take some time to look at the rest of our website to learn more about life in the 1st Battalion the Royal Welsh.
